The most popular Snorkelling Sites in Phuket include:
Racha Yai (Raya Island)
Racha Yai (Raya Island) is truly a hidden gem in the Andaman Sea! Very few tours go to Racha Yai due to the extra distance and costs, but it really is worth the trip. Snorkeling in crystal clear waters over vibrant colorful reefs and less tourists are the payoffs for paying a little extra and traveling a little further. Racha Yai (Raya Island) has protected snorkeling areas all year round. The majority of Phuket's snorkel tour operators visit Bungalow Bay in front of the Racha Resort. Good snorkeling can be found on both sides of the bay. Siam Bay has a spectacular white sand beach, which is usually completely empty, and superb snorkeling on the outer edge of the bay. The East side of the island has many great snorkeling sites in lots of little bays that are perfect for snorkeling.
We rate Racha Yai (Raya Island) as one of our favorite snorkeling & diving sites in Phuket! Of course you can always see more on our SNUBA Underwater Tour - Racha Yai - join us and Go Beyond Snorkeling during your holiday in Phuket!
Racha Yai is located 20km South of Phuket.
Phi Phi Islands
A trip to Phi Phi without snorkeling or SNUBA Diving is like going to Egypt and not seeing the pyramids. There are so many snorkeling sites in Phi Phi it's hard to know where to start. The Phi Phi Snorkeling Tours usually visit the same Phi Phi Snorkeling Sites at the same time & in the same order. They will all stop in Maya Bay which is not great for snorkeling as the depth is approx. 6-8 meters. Then off to Loh Samah which is a little shallower, but quite crowded. There are of course many other Snorkeling sites in Phi Phi that are world class, but for some reason the Snorkeling Tour operators stick to the usual tour route which skips them all. As we all know, the mass market snorkeling tours will destroy a nice shallow reef in a matter of months, so we will make this suggestion without giving away all of the locations. Look for a Phi Phi Snorkeling Tour Company that does not guarantee the usual list of places, but instead guarantees you the best snorkeling & diving in Phi Phi. We do provide bookings on a Phi Phi Snorkeling Tour that will leave you beaming ear to ear.
Phi Phi is just over 30km from Phuket.
Coral Island
Coral Island is the snorkeling mecca of Phuket. Coral Island sees more visitors per day than you can imagine. Based on the island's name snorkelers would imagine reefs teeming with fish and bursting with colorful coral. Unfortunately, unless you are a strong swimmer and are able to swim about 150 meters offshore, you won't be seeing much coral. The amount of visitors to Coral Island standing on the coral in their fins has taken a huge toll. We do not advise swimming alone out to the live coral reefs further offshore due to the heavy amount of boat traffic in the area. Unless you bring along a dive flag and buoy, we suggest snorkeling in close to shore.
Coral Island is located approx. 9 km from the Southern tip of Phuket
